Motivations

I recently read about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and it got me thinking what really works. I'll start with defining both of them,
Intrinsic motivation: the motivation that comes from within and not from money or any other reward. Motivation comes from task itself, by completing the task perfectly motivation is aroused. It doesn’t mean that no reward is involved only they are not enough to motivate.
Extrinsic motivation: this is the motivation that comes from external factors; it’s more like work in return for a reward. Bonuses, pay raise or other perks motivate.
In my opinion extrinsic motivation does work but only in short run, it will work for a few months to max a year. You can definitely easily be motivated by the paycheck getting at the end of every month but not for long. After a while you get use to the money and the void for motivation is still there, you start thinking that maybe your pay is too less and desire an increase or want a bonus to look forward to but this motivation won't make you get to work happily every day.
On the other hand if you attach you motivation to intrinsic things it will definitely last way longer. if you tend to be motivated with achieving a deadline and finishing you work you will be eager to work more. If your motivation lies in appreciation from your peers it will make you work better every time. Maybe you can be motivated by a good environment at work with good colleagues. Freedom of working on your own pace and in your own time is also a good motivator and it will make you even beyond the 9-5 shift. If you know your trusted ad valued at your job you feel like its your own work. All this can initiate intrinsic motivation which will come from within you and stay much longer. Everyday you will look forward to work.
So one should always look out for anything to tie intrinsic instead extrinsic motivations to be able to love what you do and keep loving it for a long time.
